Maddy was busy at her desk comparing price options for various flights. It was the most relevant work she had actually done in a while. Given that it was all company paid she was more concerned with the flights leaving at a reasonable time and with enough time in a layover for a diaper change than she was about price.

“How’s it going?” a message from Janice popped up in the corner of Maddy’s monitor from the company’s messaging app.

“Fine. I think I got us mostly figured out.”

“You could have just let the company book it.”

“No thanks. You remember the last time they booked for me?”

The last time Maddy had let the company book a trip for her was also the first time. At Marie’s insistence, Maddy was given a booster seat on the plane, one similar to the one she rode in in Janice’s car to get to work.

“I thought you looked cute in that plane car seat thing. I didn’t even know they made those.”

In addition to giving her a childish seat she was also booked a caretaker, or more accurately baby sitter. It was Janice, who back then did not have quite the pull at the company that she did today so couldn’t get out of the job.

“I’m always surprised at what mom manages to drag up. I wasn’t a fan of it, and I don’t recall you being that much of a fan either.”

Maddy wasn’t wrong. That fateful trip was the first time she and Janice met, and it wasn’t under ideal circumstances. Janice was not happy about being the nepo baby’s baby sitter. She had assumed that she would not only be taking care of Maddy’s diapers, but also taking care of the actual work she was supposed to be doing on the trip as well. It didn’t take long into the trip for her to realize that there was a person behind the nepo baby, and that she actually could pull her own weight and then some if given the chance.

“It all worked out in the end though right?” Janice asked. Maddy could feel Janice’s puppy dog eyes even through the messaging app.

“It did <3. Still, I’d rather not repeat it. I’m trying to be professional you know. If anyone from the meeting sees me in a booster seat on the plane they won't take me seriously. Besides the thing was ridiculous.”

“You gotta cut loose a little hun.”

“Am I wrong?”

“I’m not saying you’re wrong I’m saying you’re stressing about this a little too much.”

“It’s a stressful situation.”

“It is but it will all work out. You’ll rock it and be my new boss or you won’t and you’ll stay at your cushy job with your hot gf.”

“She’s so humble too.”

“Lol. Be sure to send over the itinerary when you get it figured out.” Maddy sent a simple thumbs up and got back to work finalizing the booking and sent the information to Janice when she finished.

With her big task for the day done Maddy leaned back in her chair with a sigh. She became frustrated when she looked at the time and saw that it was only barely approaching noon. With nothing else to do that day, Maddy rolled her eyes at the approaching boredom. She would normally be spending her time adjusting her presentation more, but Janice had suggested she stop. Maddy had to admit that she was right. Any further adjustments to the presentation would only make it worse, which meant Maddy was back to having nothing to take up her time at work. Maddy had a passing thought that she could probably bring her portable game system to work and not get in trouble for it.

Maddy was given a reprieve from her boredom with an e-mail. Unfortunately, it was an e-mail from her mother.

“I see that you’ve book your flight sweetie. I just want to make sure you’ve got all the accommodations you need. I wish you would have let our travel planner handle it.”

Maddy fumed and proceeded to type several passive aggressive responses and then deleting them feeling that they weren't aggressive enough. Janice beat her to actually responding.

“I appreciate you concern Miss. Rest assured though we have it under control.”

Maddy was a little annoyed that Janice was cc’d in the e-mail. They were dating and flying together so it made sense, but it was clear that Marie still saw Janice as her baby sitter first, coworker second, and partner third.

“I’m sure you’ll take care of her Janice. I was just wanting to make sure. I’ll get the expense for this approved now. Thanks.”

Maddy wasn’t exactly thrilled at the outcome of the exchange. Of course, one assurance from her baby sitter and her mom was satisfied. At the same time, it was probably for the best that Maddy didn’t engage in a long drawn-out exchange with her mother that would have resulted in her getting the dreaded booster seat again or some other humiliation. There was a quick knock at the door and Janice saw herself in.

“Thought it might be best if I take you to lunch before you chew our boss out,” Janice said sympathetically.

With a grumble Maddy took her girlfriend’s hand and they went to the garage where Janice’s car was. Thankfully they weren’t stopped by Marie this time and Janice got into the car seat without complaining. Janice noted that Maddy’s diaper was wet, which wasn’t unusual for this time of day, but she decided it was best to get Maddy out of the office and happily fed and handle the wet diaper later.

“So, what’s for lunch?” Maddy said still with a bit of a pout.

“Feel like a burger?” Janice asked hopefully. She looked back in the mirror to see Maddy smiling which was the yes Janice needed.

Janice drove them a good distance away from the office for their burger. Janice had finished her work for the day and she knew Maddy didn’t have any so they could stand to have a thirty-minute lunch that extended to two p.m..

“Oh, I love Harold’s,” Maddy said cheerfully from her car seat as Janice pulled up. Janice sighed in relief that Maddy’s mood was already improving.

“Well let’s not waste any time,” Janice helped Maddy out of her car seat, and on fixing the wrinkles in her outfit Maddy looked like a consummate professional again. Her good mood continued when they entered the diner style restaurant and Maddy ogled the menu and all its options.

“So, you been looking at anything you want to do on our company sponsored vacation?” Janice asked while pretending to read the menu.

“Not really,” Maddy answered quickly. “Been kinda focused.”

“Well thankfully you got me here to pick up your slack,” Janice said jokingly. “There’s this great quiet little beach, and so many cute restaurants. Plus, there’s this fun like bird tour thing I think you’re gonna like.”

“Yeah, that sounds nice,” Maddy said non commitally.

“I also thought we might do this crawl through broken glass experience and then listen to screeching for an hour,” Janice said sarcastically. Maddy moved her menu to the side to give Janice a look.

“What can I get you two?” a waitress dressed in a very vintage gingham dress interrupted the two’s conversation.

“Oh, I wanna get the bacon cheesy with the loaded fries, and a sweetie shake.”

“Same here,” Janice said with a smirk. The look Maddy shot before the waitress arrived returned with double the force. “What?” Janice shrugged innocently. “You always know the best things to get.”

“And you’re crawling through broken glass experience?” Maddy said crossing her arms.

“I just wanted to make sure you were paying attention,” Janice said defensively.

“Well, I was.”

“I’m glad.” Janice said genuinely. “I’m just a little worried. You’ve been really stressing about this presentation.”

“It’s a stressful presentation,” Maddy defended.

“I don’t disagree but it’s also a retreat,” Janice countered. “Yeah, they are doing board presentation, but they aren’t going to Hawaii for their scenic board rooms, it’s to have fun. Don’t get so wound up about this that you miss out on some fun with your girlfriend.”

“I don’t wanna miss out on fun with you I’m just … I’m trying my best.”

“I see that, and you’re doing a good job.”

“Look all that stuff you said sounds fun, and I am excited to spend time with you,” Maddy grabbed Janice’s hands on the table.

“Pick one thing to do,” Janice said smiling. “I’m happy taking care of most of the planning while you get your presentation done. You need a break though. You’ve been stressing over it for weeks. Take some time and think about something fun. You’re pretty much done with it anyway, right?”

“Yeah, I mean it’s all finalized,” Maddy turned away. “Provided there aren’t any last-minute market shifts, but even then, I think the general premise would still work. I should probably go double check ...”

“Maddy,” Janice said quickly.

“All right maybe I’m getting a little obsessive over this. Thank God it is a retreat I’m going to need a vacation after this is over.”

“Thinking about some fun things to do will help take you mind off of it.”

“I’ll pick out one thing,” Maddy accepted Janice’s suggestion.

“And Here. We. Are,” a server said dropping two identical plates filled with the same stacked and greasy burger with accompanying fries. “Enjoy!” she said before scooting off.

“But you see kinda like you let me order for you,” Maddy said eating a fry. “I trust you to plan our vacation. Whatever you decide as long as I’m spending time with you it’s time well spent,” Maddy said before getting a good grip on her burger.

“Gosh you are so sappy sometimes you know that?” Maddy was too busy chowing down on her burger to respond.
