Maddy felt distinctly out of place in Finer things. The tight and sharp looking clothing was so far removed from her usual soft and fluffy attire. Even though she and Janice were the only ones in the store at the moment, Maddy couldn’t help but feel the glare of the one worker present. She knew Maddy didn’t belong there as much as Maddy did. Janice, however, powered through despite the stare.
“I don’t know if there’s gonna be anything here that’ll hide my …” Maddy found herself suddenly more self-conscious of the diaper she was wearing and how wet it was than usual. “You know what.”
“Nonsense,” Janice said with confidence. “We just have to be a bit creative,” she said staring over a section of the store of very slimming outfits. “There,” Janice said triumphantly. She moved to an outfit in red, a blazer with a tight matching skirt in a dull maroon.
“Babe,” Maddy said looking at the tight pants concerned.
“Don’t say 'no' just yet,” Janice preempted. “We’re just taking the top from this, you look good in red. Now, we just need to find a bottom to match it.” Janice moved with purpose to another section of the store, one full of various bottoms including skirts that had a little volume in them that could hide Maddy's diapers. Janice held one up to show Maddy. It was a plaid looking skirt with a stylish set of diagonal buttons. She pressed it against Maddy so she could see that it would extend to below her knees if she wore it, and, despite being a different color, it matched the maroon blazer pretty well. Janice brought the two together and looked to Maddy. “Well?” Janice asked Maddy for a response, but one didn’t come right away. It took a moment for her to collect her thoughts.
“Sorry,” she apologized for the noticeable delay. “I like it it’s just … hard to see myself in it.”
“Well, there’s one way to fix that,” Janice gestured to the fitting rooms in the back. She handed the put together outfit to Maddy and nodded to the fitting room with a smile. Maddy smiled back and made her way inside.
“Ma’am,” the store worker approached Janice with an obvious concern on her face. “These are high quality pieces of fashion. I can’t let someone in a wet diaper …” Janice stopped her by raising her hand.
“Your clothes will be just fine,” Janice said with barely contained malice. “We will be there to check out in a moment.” The worker moved to leave with some hesitation but stopped just in time to see Maddy emerge.
Janice was correct that Maddy did look good in red. The outfit looked a little big on her, but otherwise accentuated her wonderfully. She looked every bit the adult she actually was, the skirt hiding any trace that she was wearing a diaper underneath it. If it weren’t for the unsure emotion on her face, she would have looked like a serious professional. She turned around to see herself in a mirror and struggled to believe that was her.
“Wow,” she said looking at herself, turning around a bit as she did.
“Looking good sweetie,” Janice encouraged.
“Yeah, I kinda do,” Maddy said slowly coming to terms that the woman she was seeing was her. “You know your stuff babe.”
“I like to think I do,” Janice smiled at the compliment.
“Great,” the worker said with relief. “I assume I can ring these up then.” She said eagerly. Janice turned around slowly.
“We will be there in a moment.” She spoke curtly.
“Oh um,” Maddy said suddenly panicked. “Do you guys have a bathroom?” she grabbed her stomach and winced.
“Only for employees,” the worker said quickly. “Now really I must insist that …”
“Oh no,” Maddy stammered a little. The hopelessness of the situation hit her and with no chance of making it to a bathroom she solemnly surrendered to the cramp in her gut and messed her diaper.
“Ma’am!” the worker started to protest, but Janice stopped her with a look.
“We will be purchasing these clothes, and I assume you have no reservations about what my girlfriend does in her own clothing.” The worker was quiet at the comment. “Please ring it up I will be there shortly.” The worker hurried off with a hostile glare from Janice and when she scurried off Janice hurried to meet her girlfriend.
“S-sorry,” Maddy said blushing.
“Nothing to apologize for,” Janice said comfortingly.
“But that worker …”
“Don’t worry about her. Let’s get your dress back on, ok.” Maddy nodded as the two made their way to the fitting room. It wasn’t big enough for the two of them to stand inside but Janice pretty effectively blocked the open door with her body, so she was able to help Maddy get dressed back into the clothes she wore in.
Maddy sighed a bit when she stripped to nothing covering her diaper.
“Taking it hard?” Maddy looked back to Janice as Janice started folding the soon to be bought clothing. “You did have a pretty good streak going, so I can get why you might be upset.”
“It was all just pointless!” Maddy yelled throwing her arms down. “No matter how good I do I always just … ugh!” there was a silence as Maddy calmed herself. “I feel gross.”
“We’ll get you changed soon.”
“I doubt this place has a changing room,” Maddy said annoyed.
“It doesn’t, but Bright Eyes isn’t that far,” Janice helped Maddy into her dress. Maddy sighed.
“No, it’s fine. I’m used to being messy. It’s no big deal.”
“Maddy,” Janice sighed. “It’s ok to be frustrated, and it’s ok that you aren’t there yet.”
“It’s not ok!” Maddy countered. “I should be over this, I shouldn’t be making my girlfriend change my messy diapers.”
“You’re not making me do anything,” Janice countered calmly. “Changing your diapers doesn’t bother me at all you know that.”
“Yeah, I do,” Maddy shook her head after a moment of calming down. “Sorry I’m just …”
“It’s ok sweetie I understand,” Janice smiled. “Why don’t you wait outside and get the stroller ready while I check out.”
“Babe no. This stuff is probably expensive,” Maddy said concerned.
“I said let me take care of it.”
“You just wanna chew out that clerk,” Maddy said with a chuckle.
“Maybe,” Janice admitted.
“And rob me of telling her that the girl in a messy diaper is older than she is?”
“Unfortunately, yes, but I’ll be sure to sneak that tid bit into my tirade,” Janice and Maddy both snickered.
“All right, but don’t leave me hanging too long,” Maddy relented as her dress was brought back over her head. She left the fitting room and waddled out of the store, being sure to shoot the waiting clerk a disdainful look before she left.
Maddy somewhat solemnly unlocked the stroller from its position on the bike rack and took a seat in it. She sighed again as she felt the mess in her diaper press against her. It was a feeling that was annoyingly common for her. She pulled up her phone and opened her potty-training tracker app, feeling another fresh wave of disappointment as her progress bar shrunk back down to zero when she recorded her latest accident. It even flashed a sympathetic graphic of a cartoon girl crying.
Janice exited the store with a satisfied smile and a bag filled with the purchased outfit.
“You give her a piece of your mind?” Maddy asked.
“And yours too,” Janice proudly put her hands on her hips. “Right let’s get you changed and head home yeah?” Janice started securing Maddy into her stroller.
“Janice really I’m fine,” Maddy said with a huff. “I’m used to being messy. It’s not a big deal. Plus, we still need to get swim diapers.”
“Just because you’re used to being in messy diapers doesn’t mean you are immune to diaper rash,” Janice said tightening the harness around Maddy. “It also doesn’t mean others are immune to the smell.”
“Ok, so let’s get changed and then go get the swim diapers.”
“You’ve also had a long day,” Janice said sticking a pacifier into Maddy’s mouth. Maddy pouted around the soother and looked up at her girlfriend. “We can order swim diapers from the internet.” Maddy suckled the pacifier and didn’t respond. She knew that sometimes there was no point arguing with Janice, especially true when she was the one pushing her around in a stroller.
It was a lengthy walk back to Bright Eyes, by the time they got there Maddy admitted to herself that she was ready for a diaper change, and was thankful that they weren’t trying to buy swim diapers right now.
The door to Bright eyes chimed as Janice and Maddy entered, and the cheerful clerk was still there.
“Oh, welcome back,” she said smiling. She noted the emotions on both Janice and Maddy’s face. “Need to use the changing room?”
“Yeah,” Maddy nodded with sympathy.
“Feel free. I can give you a complimentary diaper if you need it.”
“We’re good,” Janice held up the Maddy’s diaper bag. The clerk smiled and let the couple make their way to the back of the store and into one of the changing rooms with a changing table in it.
Once they were alone, Janice released Maddy from the stroller and she climbed onto the changing table, laying down with a tired huff.
“See you were tired,” Janice said as she secured Maddy into the changing table with its full set of restraints. “Bright Eyes really does have the best changing tables.” Janice said as she finished putting Maddy’s wrists into restraints and tightening them above her head more than she needed to. Maddy gave only a cursory smirk. Janice frowned as her attempt at cheering Maddy up failed.
“Sorry,” Maddy apologized. “I’m just kinda over it.”
“You’re fine. I understand,” Janice said as she pulled some gloves over her hands and opened Maddy’s diaper to assess the damage.
“And sorry about that,” Maddy winced.
“I told you before you’re fine. Just let me take care of it,” Janice said as she sat out the box of wipes “Paci?” Maddy nodded yes and found her pacifier pushed back into her mouth. Maddy found it easy to disassociate while she was getting her diaper changed. Some days she was more talkative during changes, but that was not today. She closed her eyes and suckled away at the pacifier while Janice got her clean.
After a while Janice patted the front of the new diaper and snapped Maddy out of her disassociation.
“All clean,” Janice said with a smile. She released Maddy and started putting things away, putting the dirty diaper in an odor proof bag and promptly throwing it away in a nearby trash can. Maddy got buckled herself into the stroller again while Janice finished putting things away in the diaper bag. “Ready to go home now?”
“Yeah,” Maddy said with a chuckle.
“Let’s get home then,” Janice tiredly pushed the stroller out.
“Sorry about that,” Maddy apologized to the clerk as they were leaving.
“Don’t even worry about it ma’am,” The clerk said smiling. “You are far from the first person to leave a messy diaper behind, and I doubt you’ll be the last.” The offloading of guilt did brighten Maddy’s mood somewhat. She was a little cheerier when they arrived back at the car. Maddy even helped hook the stroller back into the car so it became a car seat again while Janice put the stroller frame back into the trunk.
“So, when we get home,” Maddy said sitting in the car seat. “Naps and cuddles?”
“Of course,” Janice smiled as she buckled Maddy. Maddy smiled happily at the thought as Janice got in the car and they drove home.
