Livy looked back at the front door and wished she was back on the other side of it. She pictured herself curled up with Dan on the couch watching television and feeling cosy. Her head in his lap as he stroked her side. Instead, she was outside the house with Landon. It was like being one on one with a teacher. Livy was trying to be on her best behaviour but constantly scared of doing something wrong. She couldn’t imagine being curled up on Landon’s lap in any situation.

Landon was at the driver’s seat door of the car, unlocking it and looking back at Livy who had been dragging her feet. When she reached the car Livy automatically went towards the rear doors.

“No, sweetie.” Landon said with a patient smile, “You can sit up front today.”

Livy nodded and smiled but internally was already kicking herself. She was trying to prove she could be a big girl and yet she was already acting like a baby. When the four people in the polycule went somewhere it was always Livy and Robyn in the back. It had become a natural place to sit. Livy walked around the car and opened the front passenger seat.

“I think you’ll love this.” Landon said, “I’m going to show you some of my favourite places. We’ll start with the lovely little café near work, I’ve been going there for years… Seatbelt.”

Livy had been listening to Landon and trying not to immediately collapse from nerves when she realised she had, indeed, not done up her seatbelt. She fumbled once as she pulled it across her body and clicked it into place. She tried not to overreact, but she was sure Landon was noticing these little errors, and each one was pushing her further away from being taken seriously.

Landon reversed the car out of the driveway and then started along the road towards town. Livy played with her hands as she looked out of the window at the passing scenery, she felt like she should say something, but nothing was coming to her. The urge to just shrink down as small as possible and not be noticed was at the forefront of her mind.

“It’ll be nice to have a day out, just the two of us.” Landon said cheerfully, “Don’t you think?”

“Yes.” Livy replied quickly. Immediately she started interrogating herself. Had she replied too fast? Was it not fast enough? Did she sound a little too robotic in her response? Should she say more?

Landon let out a little chuckle. Livy hoped that meant she was off the hook from seeing anything else. As they headed into town, the car passed people going about their days. Livy couldn’t help but wonder what they were doing and what their lives looked like. The only thing she was certain of was that, for better or worse, they were probably nothing like her own.

“It’s not far.” Landon said a minute later, “I’ll park at work, and we can walk from there.”

“Work?” Livy said with a frown.

“Come on, sweetie. I know you weren’t there for long, but it wasn’t THAT long ago you were coming to work.” Landon said.

“It isn’t that…” Livy’s voice trailed off. She wasn’t really sure what she was feeling, or why she was feeling it.

There was a mixture of dread and anxiety, the idea of returning to a place that was so stressful freaked her out. It was where she had met Landon, where she had started to show that she couldn’t be an adult like everyone else. She remembered the stress piling on top of her until she could barely function. She ran away.

“You’ll be fine.” Landon said as she turned the car around a corner.

It wasn’t exactly the comforting tone Dan would’ve used. Livy knew that, physically, Landon could definitely protect her, but emotionally she was feeling very vulnerable. She was trying to be brave, trying to project a confidence she didn’t feel, and hoped Landon couldn’t see through the mask.

The car pulled into the multi-story car park that adjoined the building the old office had been at. A perk of working there was that employees could use the parking space any time they wanted as long as they had their ID with them. Landon flashed her card to a camera which must’ve scanned a code or something as the barrier in front of the car went up. Landon turned into a space on the first floor.

“Right…” Landon said as she stepped out. Her voice echoed around the almost completely empty space, “I’ve got my purse, my keys, your diaper bag…”

Livy felt her breath catch in her chest. She quickly looked around to make sure there was no one else around. Thankfully, she didn’t see anyone. The only other cars were at the other end of the car park and appeared to be empty.

“You don’t need to bring that bag.” Livy said in little more than a whisper, “I’ll be fine.”

“Are you sure?” Landon cocked an eyebrow, “No offence, Livy, but your past record doesn’t fill me with confidence.”

Livy blushed a deep crimson. It seemed somehow unfair to bring up past “incidents.” Sure, Livy had filled her diaper in almost as many locations as she had visited over the last few months, but that seemed wrong to bring up. She hadn’t been trying super hard to be Big back then, and now she was!

“I’ll tell you what…” Landon said as she placed the diaper bag on the backseat of the car, “I’ll bring a change with me in my purse. Just in case.”

Livy had little option but to accept. It was better than having an over the shoulder bag with “Livy” printed on it being carried around with them. She watched as a crisp, folded up disposable diaper was moved from the bigger bag to Landon’s purse. It only just fit, especially when a half-used pack of wipes was added.

“Right, let’s go.” Landon said as she zipped the bag up.

Landon started striding off towards the exit. She clearly expected Livy to follow as she didn’t look back. Thanks to their height difference, Livy had to walk much quicker than Landon, she could feel her thighs rubbing on the diaper which she could proudly say was still dry. She almost wanted to announce that fact to Landon. She chastised herself. What was she expecting from Landon? Praise? A reward?

Livy wished she hadn’t thought about her diaper at all. As soon as she felt proud that she had kept it dry it felt like her bladder remembered what it was supposed to do. She clenched as she hurried to match Landon’s pace down the busy street, dodging people going the other way and constantly feeling like a child about to lose their mother. She felt a very childish need to reach out and take Landon’s hand. It was an urge that she ignored.

“It’s just over here.” Landon said over her shoulder, “You’re going to love it.”

Livy was barely listening. Her heart was hammering and if she thought her anxiety in the car was bad, it was nothing compared to what she felt on the street. There were so many people and so much noise. She felt overwhelmed by it all, like her brain had reached its maximum computing power and just couldn’t take in any more stimuli. The world seemed to slow down, Livy felt like she was seeing people moving in jerky movements and she looked around, feeling her pulse quickening. She lost Landon. One second the tall woman was walking in front of her, the next, she had squeezed between two people and when Livy got through, she was gone.

Livy looked around desperately. Her knees started to shake like they were about to give way. She came to a halt and looked around at all the faces, their smiles seeming to distort into something much scarier. She felt like eyes were being drawn towards her and she was shrinking under their glares. She let out a whimper and lost control of her bladder completely. Wetting her diaper in a way that provided at least a little physical comfort, the warmth spreading in a most familiar way.

Livy closed her eyes. She wanted to run away. She wanted to hide. She wanted to curl up into a ball and be ignored by everyone. Where was Dan to pick her up and tell her it was going to be OK? She shouldn’t have been there. This street full of big businesses and fancy shops was not a place for an overgrown, pathetic baby. She had to get out of there before everyone realised what she was.

“Livy!” Landon’s voice suddenly broke through the general commotion of the street, “Over here!”

Livy looked around and saw Landon standing at the entrance of a rather quaint looking café. It seemed almost out of place in amongst all the bigger buildings around it but that was probably supposed to be part of its charm. Livy was in no position to notice the aesthetics of the situation. She pushed past a couple of people and earned a few reproachful looks as she practically ran over to Landon, just grateful to not be lost.

“Are you alright?” Landon asked. She looked concerned.

Livy nodded her head and blinked back the tears that had been on the verge of falling. She didn’t say anything because she was pretty sure that keeping her mouth clamped tightly closed was the only thing keeping back the crying that would surely follow. It felt like it was choking her. Sitting in her throat like a large lump that she couldn’t swallow.

“Come on in.” Landon said as she moved out of the way.

Livy’s anxiety, which had been ratcheted up to breaking point, dropped down to a level she felt she could manage as she walked into the small café. The door closed and did a very effective job of blocking a lot of the sound from the street outside.

The café was as posh as Livy suspected it would be. It was far from a cheap place that offered the unhealthiest breakfasts imaginable for a few dollars. This looked more like what she saw when she saw films set in Paris or Rome. The tables and chairs were immaculately clean, with an interesting design. The legs of the chairs seemed to twist as they went up and the backs of the seats had an intricate pattern.

There were a few other patrons. One older woman was sitting alone in the corner reading a book with a cup of coffee. Another table hosted two men who were both leaning forwards and smiling, having a quiet but apparently very interesting conversation.

Livy was still stood just inside the doorway, and she felt Landon’s large hand take her own as she was led into the seating area. Landon indicated a table and Livy sat down, immediately feeling the freshly warmed padding pressing against her backside in a pleasingly distracting way.

Livy admonished herself. She was supposed to be showing Landon that she could be an adult. The near panic attack from moments ago notwithstanding, she really shouldn’t feel the way she did about the wetness clinging between her legs. She tried to distract herself with the menu, which was surprisingly basic, it seemed that the place was much more for stopping and having a quick drink than anything else. She certainly wasn’t going to get a full English breakfast.

“Landon! We don’t usually see you at the weekend.” A man walked over. He was dressed formally and looked very suave. His hair was slicked back and had just a tinge of grey along the edges which only seemed to enhance his looks, “Working overtime?”

“Hello Mitch.” Landon replied. She stood out of her seat and gave the man a peck on each cheek.

Livy watched with nervous eyes. She wasn’t sure what she was supposed to do in the situation. Should she stand up again too? Would the man expect kisses from her? She remained frozen in her seat and, thankfully, Mitch didn’t seem to expect anything. Livy cursed her brain for instantly overanalysing the situation. Then she cursed herself again as she realised that she was so wrapped up in her own thoughts that she had missed the man talking to her. Both Landon and Mitch were looking at her and waiting.

“Erm… Sorry?” Livy said.

“This is Livy.” Landon said to Mitch, “She’s my partner.”

“Partner?” Mitch turned to Landon, “My apologies, I thought you were with the man you bring here for lunch sometimes?”

“Dan?” Landon laughed, “I am. It’s complicated, I’ll explain another time. For now, could I get a caramel macchiato and…”

Landon and Mitch, who must’ve been a waiter of some sort, turned to face Livy. Livy looked down at the menu in her hands and tried to look for something basic, that she knew she would be able to pronounce properly. She was so far out of her comfort zone. What sort of café had a waiter anyway!?

“Miss?” Mitch said to try and prompt Livy.

“Oh, I’ll have a… Erm…” The longer Livy took, the more she could feel the eyes on her. They seemed to bore into her head, probing to find the terrible secret that Livy didn’t belong there. She felt like it would just take a few seconds for Mitch to know, and he would laugh, Landon would see how useless she truly was. She felt a ringing in her ears and became aware that she was gripping the menu so tightly that her fingers were turning white.

“She’ll have the same as me.” Landon said to Mitch.

Livy ducked her head down but held up the menu for Mitch to take it. She felt stupid. How did a simple choice from a menu get her so flustered? How could she prove to Landon that she could be an adult when even that decision had paralysed her. She wanted to apologise to her.

“This is a lovely place, don’t you think?” Landon asked before Livy could say anything.

“Yeah.” Livy replied. She tried to push her insecurities to the increasingly cluttered box at the back of her head, “Do you come here often?”

“A few times a week.” Landon replied, “Usually for lunch with Dan.”

Livy nodded a little. She was feeling very out of place still. She remained very aware of every part of her body, not knowing where to look or what to do with her hands. In comparison, Landon was sat back in her chair, one leg lifted over the other and looking completely at ease. Livy got the feeling she was supposed to say something to continue the conversation, but she had no idea what.

“I, erm… Dan’s great.” Livy finally said after several tortuous seconds.

Landon laughed and Livy looked down at the table. She tried to laugh along with the other woman, as if what she had said was a joke or something. Unfortunately, it was the best thing her frazzled brain could come up with.

“He is.” Landon continued to smile, “I knew as much when I first met him.”

Livy found herself filled with questions she had never dared to ask before. She wondered when exactly Landon started developing feelings for her husband, but asking such a question was far too confrontational. It didn’t much matter regardless, not now that they were all in a relationship together. Maybe Livy was just worried about the answer and what it would mean. She tried to think of something else to say instead, but what did she have in common with Landon?

“How is work?” Livy asked.

“Oh, you know. The same as ever.” Landon replied.

Livy’s time working there had been little more than a constant source of anxiety. She seemed to spend more time trying to hide than actually doing any work. If she was honest, remembering that place was one of the last things she wanted to do.

“Your drinks, ladies.” Mitch had returned. On the tray he placed on the table were two small cups of coffee, “Can I get you anything else?”

“No, thank you.” Landon replied.

Mitch bowed his head and then walked away with the tray. Livy looked down at the steaming hot drink with some trepidation. If she was honest, she didn’t particularly like the taste of coffee. She really should’ve found something before Landon ordered for her. A little voice in Livy’s head asked what exactly she would’ve ordered. An orange juice? Some milk? Yeah, maybe you’d like it in a nice baba as well.

“Everything alright?” Landon asked, “You’re staring at your coffee as if it might be poisoned.”

“I’m OK.” Livy replied quickly.

Livy hurriedly picked up the cup. Landon was holding her drink and swirling it around slightly. She didn’t want to act unnaturally so she had to drink it, even if she didn’t like it. She raised it up to her lips and breathed in the strong smell of caffeine and cocoa beans.

“Livy! Wait!” Landon reached out across the table, but it was already too late.

Livy had tipped the cup and opened her mouth. She had been dreading the taste though, fortunately, she didn’t have anything to worry about on that front. Unfortunately, that was because the scalding hot liquid immediately felt like it was burning her lips and tongue.

In an automatic reaction, Livy spat out the coffee on to the table in front of her and dropped the cup on to the floor where it shattered and splashed hot drink all over the immediate area. She put her hand up to her mouth where she could feel her lips complaining. She was lucky that it seemed she hadn’t done any damage. The burning sensation passing as soon as the liquid left her mouth.

“Livy!” Landon had pushed her chair back as the coffee was spat out on to the table. She stood up and came around the table, “Are you OK?”

“Oh God.” Livy moaned when she saw the mess she had made, “I’m sorry!”

Landon looked like she was about to say something, but before she could, Mitch and some other employees descended on the scene. Livy felt like she was suddenly in a whirlwind. She was asked politely to move out of the way by one person with a cloth whilst a second repeatedly asked if she was alright and if she needed help. Landon had stood back whilst this was happening. Livy looked over to the woman and saw her looking at the stain on the carpet with a frown and pursed lips.

“I’m OK, really.” Livy kept saying, “I’m sorry.”

Livy’s face was a deep red and it wasn’t just because of the heat of the coffee. When she repeatedly said “I’m sorry” her words were aimed at Landon as much as anyone else. She felt like she had just embarrassed her right in front of the employees she clearly knew. Livy had been introduced as Landon’s partner and now Landon probably deeply regretted saying it.

“Come on.” Landon said as the hubbub died down a few minutes later, “Let’s get you cleaned up.”

As Landon took her hand, Livy belatedly realised she had spilled some of her drink down the front of her clothes. She reacted too slowly and was pulled a little towards the bathrooms. Livy felt that lump in her throat return, the one that told her she was about to burst into tears like a baby. She kept her mouth firmly shut to try and stop the sobs that she knew were right below the surface. Meanwhile, Landon got a handful of tissues and started cleaning Livy as best she could.

“So much for proving you could be treated as an adult sometimes.” Livy thought to herself darkly.
