It didn’t take long for Anna to decide to keep the mysterious phone call to herself. It might’ve been a hoax or a prank; there was no need to worry Ryan when he was clearly already on edge. Anna had noticed her husband spending a lot of time by himself and frequently found him staring into the middle distance as if seeing thigs Anna couldn’t see. Whenever she asked what was wrong, he would snap out of it and start acting what must’ve seemed normal to him but was actually very exaggerated and just concerned Anna more. Eventually Anna decided she wasn’t going to let him pretend he wasn’t worried.

“Seriously, what’s wrong?” Anna asked as they sat in the living room. The television was on, but no one was really watching it. Jane was currently cleaning the windows despite them already looking spotless.

“Nothing.” Ryan quickly smiled as if Anna would miss the expression on his face right before.

“You’ve been sat there for half an hour without saying anything.” Anna raised an eyebrow, “You think I can’t tell when something is troubling you?”

Ryan sighed. He looked over to Jane who was wearing a pastel pink shirt and nothing covering her diaper as she reached up and scrubbed the window. Anyone walking past would be able to see her like that as if she was on display in a shop window, it didn’t seem to bother her. Then he turned to Anna.

Anna felt herself blushing slightly. It was something she was doing whenever she saw anyone looking at her. Her exaggeratedly infantile outfits had been having, what Anna supposed, was the desired effect and leaving her feeling humiliated. There wasn’t a single normal adult outfit in the whole closet. That day she was wearing a purple onesie that closed between her thighs. Around her hips there was a large ballerina style frill. She had seen how her outfit bulged with the diaper underneath it.

“I’m just… worried.” Ryan finally said, “We were brought here because they supposedly have a job for me and yet it’s been nearly a week, and we haven’t heard anything. I tried to call Mr. Sawyer, but his secretary told me he was unavailable.”

“Maybe he is away on business.” Anna replied, “He seems to be a busy man.”

“I don’t know.” Ryan sat back in his chair, “I’m just on edge. They haven’t mentioned anything about that whole marketing campaign they were pushing for either. I feel like I’m constantly on the edge of a cliff and I’m waiting for someone to push me over.”

“Hey, everything is going to be fine.” Anna didn’t really know if she believed that. In her experience things were rarely “fine.”

Anna stood up and walked around the playpen to Ryan. She could hear the loud crinkles that followed every step, feel the thick padding that rubbed her inner legs and see the way Ryan’s eyes flicked down to her bulging waist. She was starting to go red again. It worried Anna how quickly her “babyhood” was becoming normalised to her. The first few days had been rough but the shadows from the past were quickly catching up on her. She was trying to make sure she didn’t lose the potty training she had worked so hard to gain.

“And I hate all this.” Ryan said as he nodded towards the diaper.

Anna sat down on the arm of the chair and leaned over to put and arm around her husband. His concern for her was cute and still something she was getting used to. She had tried to keep a brave face on everything that had happened for the most part, but Ryan had been a lot clearer with his displeasure.

“Me too.” Anna finally said, “But it’s not like we have much choice.”

“We could just run away.” Ryan said half-heartedly, “Just sneak out tonight and… run.”

“And go where?” Anna asked as she stroked Ryan’s hair, “This isn’t just a college that will kick you out. This is the government. And what about Jane? We can’t just leave her here.”

“I know.” Ryan said, “You can’t blame a man for dreaming.”

Ryan looked up as Anna leaned over him and placed a soft kiss on his lips. When she pulled back, he seemed almost surprised. They had grown to love each other but intimacy was still quite rare between them. It was the first kiss they had shared since moving into their current residence. Anna leaned down and kissed her husband again, she lingered a little longer this time until she heard giggling from the other side of the room.

Anna slowly looked up to see Jane watching them and grinning like a mischievous child who had seen something she shouldn’t have. Anna smiled as she sat back upright. She was about to suggest they make lunch when the phone rang. For a heart stopping second she thought it was going to be Thorn, thankfully it was the main landline that was ringing. Ryan got up to answer it as Anna slumped into his seat.

“Why don’t you take a break?” Anna suggested to Jane, “Isn’t there something you’d rather be doing?”

“I want whatever you want.” Jane replied. She spoke like it was a line in a play, something she had rehearsed over and over and was now simply repeating.

“But what do YOU want?” Anna asked. She already knew it was a losing battle.

“I want what-…” Jane started.

“OK, OK…” Anna sighed, “Why don’t you play with your toys for a bit?”

Yeth.” Jane nodded her head quickly before giggling and toddling away unsteadily towards the stairs.

Anna puffed out her cheeks. She really had made no progress with Jane. The poor woman seemed to have no will of her own and, despite Anna’s attempts, she was remaining exactly like she had when they arrived in the house.

There was a couple of minutes of quiet where Anna closed her eyes. As had often happened recently the moment she had nothing to think about her mind drifted back to the mysterious phone call. She was starting to regret not telling Ryan simply because she couldn’t stop dwelling on it herself. It felt like it was too late to come clean about it now.

“Well… I think we have some answers.” Ryan was walking back into the room. He was looking annoyed.

“Oh?” Anna asked as she sat up.

“Mr. Sawyer will be bringing some men here on Monday for a photoshoot.” Ryan said as he sat down on the couch.

Anna took a deep breath. She felt anxious even though she kind of knew what to expect. At least they weren’t in limbo anymore, having some idea of what was coming certainly made the whole situation feel more real. Anna hadn’t really thought too much about the marketing campaign the government were planning but now she worried about how extensive the plan was. If it was a failure, would they be kicked out and sent back to their old lives? Or worse?

After living in the spacious house Anna found herself not wanting to give it up to go back to a small flat like they were in before. She felt guilty. Maybe she really was being taken in by the nicer surroundings and forgetting what they represented. Perhaps Thorn was right, and Anna had truly been “tamed.” She hated the idea that her fiery spirit might have been dampened by a comfortable life.

“Don’t worry.” Ryan reached over and took one of Anna’s hands, “We’ll make it through. We always do.”

Anna gave her husband a small smile. It felt like she was worrying about a thousand different things, and the photoshoot was just one of them. As Ryan got up to make some coffee Anna stared up at the ceiling, her brain immediately going back to the attic again.

---

Anna had butterflies fluttering in her tummy. She nervously bit her bottom lip and picked at her nails as she looked out the living room window at the empty street outside. She felt ridiculous but was dressed as was requested by a note slipped through the letterbox the previous day.

Anna was wearing a puffy pink dress that was covered in frills. Her hair had been pulled into two braided pigtails with white bows, a tiara had been placed on her head that made her look like some cartoon princess. She had a pacifier tied around her neck that was bobbing in front of her breasts. Further down, her puffy diaper was peeking out from under the clothes, freshly changed before she put on her garish outfit. On her feet were a pair of black Mary-Jane shoes over a couple of frilly white socks with bows all around them. It felt to Anna that she looked more like a doll than a person, but every single aspect of her appearance had been ordered by Mr. Sawyer, and she wasn’t going to give him a reason to punish her.

Tho pwetty!” Jane lisped from next to Anna.

“Thanks…” Anna said. She only briefly looked around to Jane before turning back to the window.

Jane was wearing a onesie over her thick diapers. Just like Anna her outfit had been chosen for her by Mr. Sawyer in the letter that had been left for them. It wasn’t just a plain onesie though. The onesie was mostly black but had a white apron stencilled on to the front as well as frilly edges around the arms and legs. It was basically a maid outfit in onesie form.

“Is he here yet?” Ryan asked as he walked into the room.

“I don’t see him out there.” Anna replied, “Maybe he cancelled?”

“I don’t think our luck is that good.” Ryan said as he sat down on the couch.

As they waited quietly Anna thought about The Rose Resistance and the phone call she had taken from them. This was yet another time she could’ve let her husband in on the secret, but she didn’t. It just didn’t seem to be the right time, besides, she still had no actual way of going to the shopping mall like Thorn had asked and that didn’t seem like it was a situation that would change any time soon. To tell Ryan would likely mean making him worry over nothing.

A black van with tinted windows came into view followed by another identical one. Behind those were several black cars. Anna felt a shiver run down her spine.

“They’re here.” Anna said quietly.

Ryan crossed the room in just a couple of seconds and looked out as the vehicles started pulling up outside. Even Jane walked over to look out with curiosity. The stillness outside was quickly taken away as people stepped out of their vehicles and started pulling things out of the vans. Anna saw large lights, cameras and various things she didn’t recognise.

Fwiends?” Jane asked curiously.

“I don’t think so.” Ryan replied stiffly, “I’ll get the door.”

Anna wouldn’t have been surprised if the people coming to visit had their own sets of keys. She waited at the window but as the people started walking down the path she pulled away with anxiety making her feel sick. She heard the front door open and Ryan greeting some people, a couple of seconds later they started appearing in the living room.

“Alright, move that couch.” Said a man without even looking at Anna or Jane, “Push the playpen against the wall. I want lights here and over there.”

Anna could only watch as the room was rearranged by these strangers. None of them spared her a second glance despite how awfully she felt she was dressed. People kept streaming in and although the room was pretty large it was soon becoming crowded as people set up their equipment and jostled for position.

“Anna!” Ryan called from the doorway, “Mr. Sawyer wants to see us in the dining room… He asked to bring Jane as well.”

Anna was about to ask why he needed Jane, but the regressed woman was already cheerfully skipping past the men and out into the hallway. Anna followed with slow waddling steps. She could feel the men leering at her as she went past. She did her best to ignore it as she went round the corner and into the dining room.

“Ah, the lovely Mrs. Manning…” Mr. Sawyer said. He was sitting at the table, and Ryan was sitting opposite him, “Have a seat.”

“Your men are rearranging our living room.” Anna said with poison in her voice.

“I’m sure it’s for a good reason.” Mr. Sawyer said. He turned to Ryan, “In fact, that’s why I’m talking to you. We’re going to be doing an in-depth interview with you both today.”

Before Mr. Sawyer could say anything more Jane came toddling over with a tray in her hands. She had coffee for the men and two bottles of juice for herself and Anna. They were placed on the table, but Anna studiously ignored the infantile drinking vessel.

“How’s the maid working for you?” Mr. Sawyer asked with a pleasant smile. Anna’s skin crawled.

“She’s…” Ryan started. He had barely opened his mouth when Anna interjected.

“Bastard.” Anna spat out, “How could you do this to her? You and your friends are all monsters.”

“You’re lucky we have work to do, or I would have you over this table for a spanking.” Mr. Sawyer said darkly, “I’m not in the habit of allowing little girls like you talk to me like that.”

For a few tense seconds there was silence. Mr. Sawyer and Anna were staring at each other with their eyes locked. Anna knew this was a battle she couldn’t win but she couldn’t help herself. Giving them Jane in this regressed state was like salt being rubbed in the wound.

“Mr. Manning, would you kindly remind your wife that the privileges you enjoy are entirely at my discretion.” Mr. Sawyer said without looking away from Anna.

Anna felt Ryan’s hand on her back, and she reluctantly backed down. She folded her arms across her chest as there was the sound of something dropping and smashing in the living room. Jane squealed as if the sound of something breaking was a call specifically for her. She grabbed the nearby dustpan and brush and waddled quickly towards the living room.

“I wish we had more time for these… pleasantries.” Mr. Sawyer said as he finally turned to Ryan, “But this promises to be a long day, and we need to get started.”

Mr. Sawyer reached down and pulled out a stack of papers. He handed sheets to both Ryan and Anna before placing his own on the table. Anna looked down and saw an itinerary, it seemed this interview was going to cover a lot of ground, and the paper was a cheat sheet of how to answer.

“As you are both aware, you are to be the forefront of this marketing campaign for both domestic and foreign audiences.” Mr. Sawyer said, “And to start this we need to get your names out there. We’re going to dub the three of you “The Perfect Sallasian Family”. The first step is to simply get your names known to the general public. Soon you will both become synonymous with Sallas. Won’t that be wonderful?”

“None of this is true…” Anna said as she read some of the “suggested” answers for questions, “Like, this question “What are your biggest hopes for the future?” You want me to say, “To help my wonderful husband in his career and give him many beautiful children.” I wouldn’t say that at all!”

Anna felt Ryan adjust in his seat uncomfortably. Things like children had simply not been something they’d discussed before. She started feeling awkward herself. It was hardly the right place for the topic to be broached for the first time.

“Remember what you are here for.” Mr. Sawyer replied simply, “We want you to be the perfect family. What you actually want is irrelevant.”

“You want me to lie.” Anna said.

“Now you’re getting it.” Mr. Sawyer smiled thinly, “Good girl.”

Anna scowled as she looked away. She finally shrugged off Ryan’s hand and crossed her legs as much as she was able to, she knew that in her current outfit her anger made her look like a pouting overgrown toddler. She didn’t want to lie but she, of course, had no say in the matter.

“I’ll give you a few minutes to look over the papers.” Mr. Sawyer said as he stood up, “Then we can begin.”

Mr. Sawyer exited the room leaving Anna and Ryan alone. Anna watched him go with pure hate burning her eyes. As soon as he was out of sight she turned back to the table and let out a frustrated hiss. She pushed the paper across the table.

“We should probably at least look at what they want us to say.” Ryan said slowly.

“I don’t need to look at that to know what they want.” Anna replied acidly. She continued in a sarcastic tone, “They want me to say I’m a good little girl who does want my big strong husband tells me.”

“I hate it too.” Ryan replied tentatively, clearly worried his wife’s temper might re-direct on to him, “But what else can we do?”

Anna shrugged. She knew there were no options but that didn’t stop her righteous feeling of injustice. She sat there with her arms and legs crossed until they were called in from the living room. She didn’t want to go anywhere but she slowly pushed her chair back and stood up. Ryan took her hand with both of his.

“I know it doesn’t mean much but I’ll be with you.” Ryan said.

“It means a lot.” Anna leaned forwards and they shared a small kiss, “Let’s get this over with.”

The living room had been transformed into a makeshift studio. Anna looked around at a dozen men who were all staring at her. She ducked her head. She hated feeling inferior, but it was hard not to when she was dressed as she was amongst all these professionals. She followed Ryan over to the couch which was now bathed in studio lights with microphones hanging above. As she sat down, she looked at the cold gaze of the two cameras staring at her unblinkingly. She knew this wasn’t being broadcast live, but she still felt as if millions of eyes were on her.

Mr. Sawyer sat down on a seat between the two cameras. There was some more activity as various people made last minute adjustments to their equipment. Jane came wobbling in with drinks for Mr. Sawyer and Ryan. Anna still had her bottle with her; it was placed on the table in front of her.

“Is everyone ready?” Mr. Sawyer called out.

There were various affirmations and then the room got quiet. Anna felt her heart beating harder. It was show time, she had to push her emotions and true thoughts into a box at the back of her mind so that she could play “the good wife” for the cameras. She had to remember that failing to do her job here could mean being sent way and ending up like Jane.

“Mr. Manning, it’s lovely to join you in your home today. Would you like to introduce us to your pretty little wife?” Mr. Sawyer asked in his best presenter voice.

There was a small pause where Ryan looked at Anna. She subtly nodded her head and urged him to answer. She watched as a large false smile appeared on his face, and he started talking.

“Of course, this is Anna.” Ryan said. He put an arm around her shoulders, “It’s lovely to have you with us.”

The interview started with an exchange of pleasantries. Anna actually had it slightly easier than Ryan in that she really wasn’t expected to say anything unless directly asked. It didn’t mean she wasn’t internally dying from the humiliation. The questions were so dehumanising.

“So, Ryan, tell us what the best aspect of having a wife in Sallas is.” Mr. Sawyer asked.

Anna’s big, forced smile hid that she wanted the floor to swallow her whole. Ryan hesitated. It seemed like he was trying to find an answer that would satisfy everyone but there clearly wasn’t one. Anna could practically feel the defeat radiating off him as he gave in to giving the answers Mr. Sawyer wanted.

“That’s a difficult one; I had to think about that for a minute.” Ryan chuckled, “But I think having a wife who… who knows her place really helps me to focus on the important things. Whilst she is cooking and cleaning I can concentrate on work.”

“Of course, there are a lot of benefits to the Sallasian system.” Mr. Sawyer nodded as he spoke, “Tell me, Ryan, is it true what they say about Sallasian women? That they know how to treat their men in EVERY respect?”

“Well, I’m not the sort to kiss and tell.” Ryan laughed. Anna felt his arm tense around her, “But I have no complaints in that department!”

Anna was set to explode. Her eyes were watering as she forced the smile to remain on her face even as the men behind the camera smirked and made obscene gestures towards her. She tried to focus on looking at the camera lens. She tried to tune out the voice of her husband as he degraded her, she knew he had no choice, but it didn’t the words from stinging.

“And Anna, how about you?” Mr. Sawyer asked as he turned to Anna, “How would you say the Sallasian system has benefited you?”

The question almost caused Anna’s brain to short-circuit. In any other situation just being asked that question would’ve caused Anna to launch herself at her conversation partner. The “Sallasian system” was nothing more than a fancy way of saying extreme institutionalised misogyny. Anna collected herself and took a calming breath. She knew what she had to say even if the words caused bile to rise up from her stomach.

“The Sallasian system is wonderful.” Anna said. She found herself putting on a slightly high-pitched voice as if she was trying to play the part of a stupid woman in a film, “I can focus on what I’m good at, making sure the house is nice for my husband. I don’t have to worry about making money or complicated things that I can’t handle, isn’t that right, honey?”

Anna looked at Ryan. The fake smile remained in place though she was sure her eyes conveyed her true horror at what she was saying. Ryan returned the smile and nodded as he squeezed one of her hands. She felt like a traitor to everything she believed in, she hated to imagine that people she once knew might see her saying the things she was.

“But, Anna, what about the diapers?” Mr. Sawyer asked, “I’m sure many people watching this overseas will question what, for them, may seem like odd clothing choices.”

“Oh, this just helps to make me a better housewife.” Anna answered. She was very aware that the dress didn’t go down far enough to cover her padding, she was also aware that the camera trained on her had panned down to look at the crinkling plastic.

“How does it help?” Mr. Sawyer asked.

“Well, it’s common knowledge that women’s brains are… inferior to men.” Anna said, practically through gritted teeth. She thought she might throw up, “The diapers mean I have one less thing to worry about and I can concentrate on my chores.”

Anna could only imagine what women around the world would think if they saw what she was saying. She felt like a traitor to feminism and females around the world. Her only hope was that the whole propaganda plan fell apart and this horrid interview would never be seen by anyone.

The questions just kept coming. For hours they sat there and answered everything that was thrown at them. Occasionally they stopped briefly to re-tape an answer but for the most part it kept going completely uninterrupted. Anna felt like she was going mad. Every answer was along the same lines. Men could only succeed without women distracting them at work whilst females were happy at home to not be burdened by education or work.

Anna tried to avoid drinking from the baby bottle for as long as possible, but she was never going to be able to hold off on it forever. They had been going for at two and a half hours when her thirst finally overruled her dignity. She saw the camera swing to her as she picked up the bottle and brought it up to her mouth. The amber teat passed her lips, and she sucked down the juice greedily all the while being filmed. Mr. Sawyer gave Anna a smirk of superiority that Anna couldn’t stand to see. She closed her eyes to avoid having to see how superior he saw himself.

The questions went on and on. Anna wasn’t sure how long she was sat there before her bladder finally became impossible to ignore. She had been shifting in her seat for a while before she finally let go. Hot urine started streaming out of her and into the diaper. She had tried to keep what was happening a secret but clearly her restlessness had attracted attention.

“Quick! Anna, open your legs and show the camera!” Mr. Sawyer ordered.

“W-What!?” Anna’s eyes widened.

“Do it!” Mr. Sawyer exclaimed, “Tom, get this on camera!”

Anna slowly did as she was told. Her face blazed with embarrassment as her knees separated, and she saw the cameras focusing on the spreading wetness. Her eyes burned with tears that she blinked away. No sooner had she finished than she was doing her best to cover herself up again.

“And it seems we have just witnessed one of the biggest benefits of keeping your girls in diapers.” Mr. Sawyer said as he turned back to Ryan, “They have no need to take a break from chores for needless breaks.”

Anna could only sit and listen as Ryan agreed with the man from the government that all women should be kept in diapers. She was forced to smile vacuously even though she was internally screaming.

“And, Anna, why don’t you tell us why you are happy to be kept in diapers?” Mr. Sawyer asked after several minutes of questions aimed at Ryan. It felt like a question she had been made to answer a dozen times or more.

“Well, I… I…” Anna stuttered. The diapers were something she absolutely hated. She had been lying with every answer she had given but this felt like the hardest thing she’d had to do yet.

“Go on…” Mr. Sawyer nodded his head encouragingly like he was coaxing an answer out of a shy toddler.

Anna’s pride already felt like it had gone twelve rounds with a heavyweight boxer. The battered remains were telling her not to give in, to resist as she always had, but the voice was quiet and easily shushed by the side of her brain telling her to give them what they wanted.

“I like that they’re warm…” Anna said quietly. The smile was harder to maintain than ever before, “I like how thick they are, I like that they make me feel safe and make me… make me a better wife.”

“Fantastic.” Mr. Sawyer beamed.

Anna felt small and pathetic. She slumped in her seat feeling completely beaten. A tear ran down her cheek as she imagined people watching this and seeing just what a laughingstock she was. A traitor to her beliefs. Anna wondered if she wouldn’t have been better off locked up in a Finishing School, at least she would still be able to look at herself in the mirror.

“Well, let’s stop there for lunch, shall we?” Mr. Sawyer said as he stood up, “We’ll come back in an hour to continue. Anna, don’t change that diaper.”

“Continue?” Ryan asked as he stood up.

“Of course.” Mr. Sawyer replied, “We have a lot of material to go through this afternoon.”

Mr. Sawyer and the rest of the crew walked away from the equipment and spread throughout the house as if it were theirs rather than Anna and Ryan’s. Anna was still sat on the couch when Ryan took his seat next to her again, he took her hand with both of his.

“I feel disgusting.” Anna said weakly.

“It’s OK.” Ryan replied softly, “You don’t have a choice.”

“Don’t I?” Anna asked, “Maybe if my values really meant something to me, I would’ve told them to shove it regardless of the consequences.”

“I’m very glad you didn’t.” Ryan said softly.

As Anna sat in her misery wondering what was right and wrong one of Mr. Sawyer’s aides brought lunch for the married couple. They both came in clear plastic bottles and were largely the same except for the large baby bottle on top of one.

Anna ate lunch in silence. She thought about who she felt she was as a person, the firebrand who could never be tamed, she took pride in that. Not for the first time since acceding to the offer of Mr. Sawyer did she wonder if she had sold herself out for the promise of a comfortable life. How would the younger Anna look at her now?

People started trickling back into the room as they finished their lunches. They mostly spoke to each other with no one giving the couple on the couch a second look. Anna felt tired out from the morning and wasn’t looking forward to even more questions and the acting she would have to do to answer them. Hopefully there wasn’t much left to talk about, it didn’t feel like there could possibly be much more.

“I have to say Jane has been very accommodating.” Mr. Sawyer strode in and took his seat with a smile.

“What have you done to her!?” Anna immediately exclaimed.

“Relax, girl, we were just talking.” Mr. Sawyer replied easily, “Well, it was a bit of a one-sided conversation, naturally. I was just making sure you’d been a good girl since you got here. I’m happy to report that Jane said you’d been following all the rules.”

Anna ducked her head in shame. It felt like being given a clean report card by the asshole in the seat across from her was the biggest sign she was doing the wrong thing. She would have to check in with Jane later and make sure she was alright, she didn’t trust any of these men as far as she could throw them.

“Right then, let’s resume.” Mr. Sawyer cracked his knuckles.
